'Jersey Shore' challenges 'The Hills' to 'Gauntlet'-style showdown!

At this point I'm convinced that MTV only continues to churn out seasons of "The Real World" to keep their "RW/RR Challenges" alive and kicking. The seasons vs. seasons competitions are endlessly more entertaining than the individual seasons and keep their best characters omnipresent in our lives.

Well, the cast of my favorite new MTV series, "Jersey Shore," are also fans of the speedo-friendly competition show and have a truly inspired idea. "It would be awesome to do 'The Hills' versus 'Jersey Shore,' like 'Real World/Road Rules Challenge,'" Ronnie told InTouch.

"We would ruin them, "JWoww seconded! "I'd take on all six girls [at once]!" Upon hearing that, The Situation immediately agreed since that'd give him a one in six shot at getting some action ... finally!

So, listen up MTV -- you really must make this happen. It doesn't have to be a season-long situation, just make it a one off two-hour East Coast/West Coast royal rumble. Consider it a holiday present from you to me! M'kay, thanks!

Thank You For Being A Friend...

Author Michael A. Jones, who is the Communications Director for the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School, and previously was Communications Director for Pax Christi USA, a progressive Catholic human rights organization, has listed what he calls, The Top Five Straight Allies in Congress for 2009 at the website, Change.org.

Now, I don't think it will come as much of a surprise to anyone who reads this that all five lawmakers are Democrats, but it is interesting who Mr. Jones has picked, and the reasons he gives for each choice. After reading the article, I can't say I disagree with his picks. It's particularly interesting (to me, anyway) that a couple of the people on the list were lawmakers who initially voted for the legal abomination known as the "Defense of Marriage Act", but who are now publicly issuing mea culpas & are even working to undo the miscreant legislation. One of those people on Mr. Jones's list even went so far as to say that his vote in favor of DOMA in 1996 was the worst vote he had taken in the 37 years he's been in politics.

I'm pretty sure that some people might compare the conversion of these Johnny-Come-Lately's to the (political) light side to--in the parlance of the rural South (where I have spent most of my life)--closing the barn door after the horse has already gotten out. I can't argue that point either.

But, just like an alcoholic seeking to break an addiction before it breaks him/her, the first step to recovering & making things right again is to admit you have a problem, and eventually apologizing to all those you have hurt. These politicians can and should apologize, but words--in and of themselves, of course--are only as valuable as the actions that back them up.

Progressives Pushing At The 11th Hour To Get Public Option Back In

Say what you want about us pesky, loopy lefties, but there are some very legitimate reasons why we are so vocal about this.

On the other hand, I do largely concede the very important points Congressman Elijah Cummings made tonight while appearing as a guest on MSNBC's Ed Show. To sum it up: Even against a backdrop of such a terribly flawed, compromised and dishonestly crafted bill, the prospect of saving many thousands of lives each year via expanded healthcare is too important not to go along with it. I find myself having to agree.

Chelsea Handler blogs: Audrina patridge; a star?

Star Magazine is reporting that Audrina Patridge is planning where her Hollywood Walk of Fame star will be located. She wants it to be somewhere "cool" like near James Dean or Johnny Depp.

The biggest problem with this story is that there are currently no plans for her to receive a star, and I have serious doubts that there ever will be. Although I've certainly seen some names I don't recognize on that sidewalk, none of them have ever been a half-retarded reality-show star who is best known for Carl's Jr. commercials. I think the owner of Carl's Jr., who I assume is named Carl, should have one before she does.

If she somehow gets one, I doubt she'll get to pick the location. When Johnny Depp got his star, he actually said, "Don't ever put that Audrina Patridge girl's star next to me. Anyone else is fine, including Richard Simmons or Tara Reid."

Kathie Lee Gifford Tells a Nice Story About the Clinton Marriage

Kathie Lee told a story about attending a dinner at the White House with the Clintons during the whole Monica Lewinsky scandal. "When you see the dynamic of two people together in an unedited way, you get a glimpse of them which I think is priceless," she said. We assumed, since it was sassy Kathie, that she would tell some story about the two of them being hilariously bitter with one another. But instead, she did the opposite.

"At one point, it was getting late. Hillary, who was First Lady at the time, comes around like this," Kathie Lee said, getting out of her chair and going behind Hoda to rub her shoulders. "She starts to rub his back. She goes, 'Come on, sweetie, it's getting late. Let's go home.'"

Gifford joked that maybe Hillary had allowed the tender moment so that Gifford herself would go on TV years later and talk about it. We're sure that's what some people in the media who hate the Clintons would believe. But we'll admit it was kind of refreshing to hear something nice about the pair these days. They are, when you think about it, the mom and dad of today's Democratic Party. Sure, they're weird and embarrassing and sometimes you hate to love them. But they did, after all, make you who you are today.

No Liberal Revolt Against Obama

David Paul Kuhn – Wed Dec 23, 1:00 am ET

We are told Barack Obama has problems with his base. The New York Times headlined: "Liberal Revolt on Health Care Stings White House." Politico headlined: "Left rebels against health reform" and "Under Obama, the Left feels left out." At The Washington Post, a David Broder column carried the headline: "The president, abandoned by his party." And that's only in the past week.

It's hype. Obama's current Democratic approval rating, 84 percent, is above Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter at the close of their first year in office. More Democrats approve of Obama than Republicans approved of Ronald Reagan (81 percent) at the close of Reagan's first year, according to Gallup polling.

In fact, Obama's Democratic approval has slid only a few points all year. Indeed, the further left on thepolitical spectrum, the stronger Obama's support. Conservative Democrat approval: 77 percent. Moderate Democrat: 83. Liberal Democrat: 86.

This article repeats a number of my thoughts in support of Obama.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ucgg/americasinafunk

Yet, on the other hand, when I count down the changes the president and his team have made, they are close to remarkable in a real political world, not some shimmering Camelot.

Most agree he has avoided the major recession his big-talking predecessor left him, and the present team is ready to reinstate meaningful regulation. And as of this writing, it looks as though a health care reform bill will actually pass Congress, in itself an accomplishment of Rooseveltian proportions.

In one short year, Obama has changed the entire lexicon of political parlance in America. Who at the top talked seriously about global warming and environmental change before? And he has changed the vision of the world toward America. The Copenhagen climate conference, which certainly had its inevitable comical U.N. moments, was a real start in an area where there was nothing but stasis before.

Yet we, the American people, have been trained over the last 20 years by television and modern mercantilists to want, even demand, immediate gratification. Obama is smart and elegant and decent, but I fear to tell you, my fellow citizens, that he remains only a man. There -- it's out! The bunnies he can pull out of his top hat are no more consequent than any magician's, but the long-range change he is trying desperately to set in motion is very, very real.

Oprah Christmas Special at the White House clip

His answer to the poll numbers is really interesting, and really, it puts me greatly at ease.

It reminds me of why I really, genuinely like this guy.

I also like what Michelle says about "reading about it, and being in it", because I think it's so easy for all of us to get stuck in "blogger-mode" and forget about what it's really like out there in the country for people on a day-to-day basis. And I think only watching the media or reading the blogs really skews your view and makes it harder to see the bigger picture and the reality of a situation. It's so easy to get stuck in our own heads.

The rest of the special is in parts on Youtube by different uploaders, if anyone wants to watch them.

Posting for perspective -

I thought it would do me so good, personally, and those of you clearly sick and tired of my own recent foray into negative posts over the healthcare legislation, to ask all who would care to, to join me in voting for your favorite accomplishment of Obama's first year.

Indeed, there have been many!

So let me also start out by offering my sincere apology to you if I have overloaded your senses with my complaining, and then offer up my own vote for Obama's best accomplishment during his first year in office.

This one's a twofer. I give A+s to Obama & Clinton for pulling this off as a team: Reestablishing good relations and goodwill with so many of our friends and neighbors in the rest of the world!

Compared to the way things were going with our foreign affairs of just a year ago, the way we are making diplomatic progress now is as if we aren't even living in the same century, as if we all stepped out of the dark ages, as if, well, we actually have competent, thinking leaders at the helm.

Do you have a favorite Obama accomplishment of 2009? I was thinking if we got enough of them listed then we might even put them up to a poll and vote up a community favorite, if you're game! :)

brody & jayde break up

Another couple from The Hills is reality-TV history. Brody Jenner and Jayde Nicole have broken up after about 15 months together, a source close to Jenner confirms to UsMagazine.com.

Nicole, 23, hinted at the split on her Twitter around 8pm Dec. 18 with a wistful entry: "'Sometimes when you truly love someone you have to let them go.....' I never really understood that quote until now."

The night before, however, the former Playboy Playmate was feeling festive. A source tells UsMagazine.com that Nicole "celebrated her breakup" with a 12-strong crew of girlfriends at Hyde Lounge in West Hollywood.

Her single-lady party continued on Dec. 19, when the model hosted a shindig at Chicago's Manor nightclub. An insider at Manor tells UsMagazine.com that Nicole was "telling everyone" about her Dec. 17 breakup. "She made it sound like it was his doing, saying, 'He said he needs time to 'find himself. I don't have time for that.'" Her ex Jenner, she told friends, has "gone to Australia" for some soul-searching.

Jenner himself Tweeted about starting "a new life" Down Under on Dec. 19. "So I decided to stay in Australia BY MYSELF!!! Hahaha this is Crazy.. Might just stay here and start a new life."

Despite the sad news, Nicole wasn't in a gloomy mood at Manor, the source says. "She didn't seem bothered by the recent breakup at all. She spent the entire night downing Jager shots and flirting with all of the guys."

Indeed, her Tweets from that night bear that out. "Rocking out at Manor" she wrote a 1:33am on Dec. 20. "Jager time!"

By 11:30am, she was feeling the effects of all those Jagermeister shots: "8 hours of sleep, too much jager= not good."

On the just-concluded fifth season of The Hills, Nicole and Jenner argued about his flirty relationship with aggressive ex-girlfriend Kristin Cavallari. "Everything was totally fine before you came here, so you need to go back to wherever it is that you came from," Nicole sniped at Cavallari in one heated exchange on the show.

Awkward alert: all three are signed on to shoot the sixth season of The Hills early next year.

MY LEGAL RESEARCH MAKES ME FEEL BETTER ABOUT THE SENATE BILL

Everytime there is major legislation that harms a specific industry there are major constitutional attacks on the legislation. Senator Hatch has been very vocal about the unconstitutional nature of the Senate bill. I decided to do some research about this legal arument and found this article in support of Senator Hatch's argument.

http://www.pointoflaw.com/columns/archives/2009/12/impermissible-ratemaking-in-he.php

I found this statment very confronting to me, a Democrat who supports a single payor system:

"In effect, the onerous obligations under the Reid Bill would convert private health insurance companies into virtual public utilities. This action is not only a source of real anxiety but also a decision of constitutional proportions, for it systematically strips the regulated health-insurance issuers of their constitutional entitlement to earn a reasonable rate of return on the massive amounts of capital that they have already invested in building out their businesses."

Don't be so down on a bill until you know what is in it.
